What Are Residential Proxies and How Do They Work?

A residential proxy routes your web traffic through a real device on a home internet connection — a laptop, phone, or router assigned an IP address by an internet service provider (ISP). Because the request appears to come from an ordinary household, target websites treat it like any other visitor, which makes residential proxies far harder to detect or block than datacenter IPs.

How a residential proxy works

When you send a request through a residential proxy, three things happen:

1. Your request goes to the proxy provider’s gateway instead of directly to the target site.
2. The gateway forwards it through a real residential device in the location you selected.
3. The target site sees that device’s residential IP address — not yours — and returns the response back along the same path.

To the destination, the traffic is indistinguishable from a genuine local user browsing from home.

Why the IP matters

Websites classify visitors partly by the type of IP address they use. Datacenter IPs come from hosting providers and are easy to identify and bulk-block. Residential IPs belong to consumer ISPs, carry a strong trust signal, and are rarely blocked outright because doing so would also block real customers.

That trust is what makes residential proxies the default choice for tasks that hit anti-bot defenses.

Rotating vs. sticky sessions

• Rotating: every request (or every few minutes) uses a different IP from the pool. Ideal for large-scale scraping where you want to spread requests across many addresses.
• Sticky: the same IP is held for a set window (often up to 30 minutes) so multi-step flows like logins and checkouts complete from one consistent address.

When to use residential proxies

Residential proxies are the right tool when the target actively detects and blocks non-residential traffic. Common uses include:

• Web scraping and data collection on protected sites
• Ad verification and brand protection
• Price and search-result monitoring
• Managing social or marketplace accounts as a local user

If your target doesn’t fingerprint IP origin — for example, open APIs or unprotected pages — a cheaper datacenter proxy may be all you need. For a stable IP that never rotates, look at ISP proxies.
